A Romance Reader’s New Year’s Resolutions

I’m very much a goal-oriented person. I love to make a to-do list and am satisfied as I cross off each item on the list. As you can guess, I love a good New Year’s resolution list.

As a reader and reviewer, I find that the TBR pile truly is never-ending. There are so many amazing books out there—not to mention the amazing ones that have yet to be written.

On a more personal note: as a person of color, I’m embarrassed to look at my shelves and see how few of the books and authors there are diverse. There are some, but…not many. Not enough.

With all this in mind, my New Year’s resolutions for 2018 as a romance reader and reviewer are:

  1. Work on my ARC backlog. I’m always behind schedule, mostly with my NetGalley and Edelweiss ARCs. In recent months, I’ve become more selective with the galleys that I request, which is a good start. I want to continue being selective in the upcoming year. I also want to get caught up on all the reviews I’m behind on.
  2. Read more diversely. This means books by authors of color, books with diverse characters, #ownvoices, LGBTQ+ romance…to start. I want to promote books that elevate the stories of people from diverse backgrounds. Sadly, this is something I’ve done a poor job of in the past. But I’m determined to change that.

I’m very much a mood reader, so you’ll still see a mix of new titles, backlist titles, well-known authors, indie authors, and whatever my wayward reading heart desires.

Thank you for reading my reviews, even when sometimes I wonder if anyone is. ☺

I wish you a happy new year! 🎉
